From August 31 to September 1，the first International Conference on Corrosion Resistant Steel and New Metallurgical Technologies was successfully organized by NISCO in Nanjing, Jiangsu. The conference was co-hosted by Chinese Society for Corrosion and Protection, University of Science and Technology Beijing and Corrosion Resistant Steel Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance.
Mr. Zhu Ruirong, President of NISCO; Ms. Jiang Shangqing, Vice Director of Development, Science & Technology and Environment Protection Department of China Iron and Steel Association; Mr. Sandy Willianson, former President of NACE International, and Academician Mao Xinping, Vice President of Baosteel Central Research Institute attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Mr. Li Xiaogang, Deputy President of Chinese Society of Corrosion and Protection, presided the opening ceremony.
Mr. Zhu Ruirong expressed his warm welcome to the participants in the opening address and introduced the original intention and desire of undertaking this high-level academic conference. He pointed out that the comprehensive properties of China's steel materials still have weakness in corrosion resistance, and there is still a certain gap compared with the international first-class level products. This conference will follow the international development frontier and build a communication platform for the research and development and promotion of corrosion resistant steel materials in China. The conference focuses on the basic theory and key technology of the whole process of low-alloy corrosion resistant steel, clad steel plate, stainless steel and other varieties, pays close attention to the pain points and difficulties in the research and development, production, machining and welding, application and evaluation technology of corrosion resistance of high performance corrosion resistant steel materials, and aims to hold discussions on the current situation and development trend of the cutting-edge technology in the world.
Mr. Zhu Ruirong said that NISCO has been committed to the research of corrosion resistant steel product development, corrosion resistant mechanism and corrosion test evaluation methods. NISCO has built the National Material Environmental Corrosion Platform Nanjing Atmospheric Station, actively promoted the construction of key laboratories for Low-Alloy corrosion resistant steel, and cooperated with University of Science and Technology Beijing to promote the establishment of "corrosion-resistant steel map” in order to meet the needs of research and application of corrosion resistant steel in different regions and environments.
Ms. Jiang Shangqing said in her speech that the iron and steel industry has made significant contributions to the development of national economy. The 2019 Government Work Report pointed out that in order to promote the high-quality development of China's manufacturing industry, the iron and steel industry as the basic industry should take the leader in achieving high-quality development to support the development of whole manufacturing industry. The corrosion resistant performance of iron and steel materials has attracted more and more attentions from experts of home and abroad. Improving the corrosion resistance of iron and steel materials is a direction of high-quality development of iron and steel industry itself.
Academician Mao Xinping said in his speech that iron and steel will be used as an important structural material for a long time in the future because of its abundant resources and excellent performance, but the corrosion phenomenon is still the weakness of the application and development of iron and steel materials. In the future development of iron and steel industry, on the one hand, the ecological and environmental production problems need to be figured out from the source; on the other hand, new performance of iron and steel materials needs to be explored to solve the corrosion problems. Mao Xinping believed that it was really timely and necessary to hold this conference on corrosion resistant steels and related new technologies.
Active Research and Development of New Materials
The bridge steel plates Q345qENH and Q420qENH developed by NISCO meet the requirements for construction of weather-resistant bridges and have been successfully applied to the first national all-weather resistant and coating-free bridge “Lalin Railway Extra-large Zangmu Bridge over the Yalu Zangbo River” located at the highest altitude with the longest span in the world. NISCO also get involved in many landmark projects such as San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge USA, seven-span bridge projects in North America and so on. In addition, NISCO has reached achievements in research and development of clad materials such as duplex stainless steel, heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant alloy steel, titanium plate and titanium alloy steel, etc.
Continuous Development in High-end Manufacturing
NISCO always recruits and gathers excellent talents. At present, there are more than 40 doctors and 300 postgraduates working in NISCO Research Institute. NISCO focuses on high-end plate products, actively cooperates with research institutes and colleges, and benchmarks with Huawei and other advanced enterprises in other industries in order to learn their operation and management philosophy. NISCO has strengthened innovation and R&D investment in order to gain outstanding advantages in the fields of medium and heavy plate and other fields.
Firm Promotion of Environmental Protection
NISCO has actively promoted the construction of green steel city, with a total investment of 3 billion yuan in environmental protection in the past two years. The environmental protection transformation of coking process was completed last year and similar revamping of sintering process is expected to be completed by the end of this year. After completion of these projects, all kinds of emission indicators of NISCO will be better than the national standards. The Conference on Corrosion-Resistant Steels and Metallurgical Technologies is a high-level large-scale international conference, inviting more than 200 participants including academicians, experts and scholars from 16 countries such as the United States, Australia and Canada, as well as representatives of major domestic universities and enterprises. A total of 49 academic reports were delivered and brought together the latest research results on corrosion resistant steel and the new metallurgical technologies. Upon invitation, many experts paid a visit to NISCO production site after the conference.
